31. SONNET FOR
AMI
She wore a black
leather jacket and cap
So bulky and frumpy
it seemed a disquise
Stopped at my bus
door and gave it a rap
I opened -- looked
into her gentle eyes
Her bike was decrepit
with wobbly wheels
No money had she
but her voice was kind
When I work for free
my broken heart heals
So fixing her bike
brought peace to my mind
Our friendship began,
we sat and drank tea
Inside my bus --
we talk'd and laugh'd till night
In parting we hugged
like the shore and sea
The following months
were sure sweet all right
Became years! and
now as friends we'll endure
All our lives as
true as a child is pure.
